这三个系统也采用不同方式来唤醒驾驶员的注意力,以及不同的升级顺序和故障安全措施.对于高级辅助驾驶的使用,IIHS所筛选出的这三种系统都使用方向盘中的传感器来检测驾驶员何时把手放在方向盘上.爱普生晶振不同的是凯迪拉克的SuperCruise允许驾驶员长期将手从方向盘上移开,日产/英菲尼迪ProPILOTAssist和特斯拉Autopilot是要求驾驶驾驶员基本上双手要在方向盘上,并通过面向驾驶员的摄像头来监控驾驶员有没有在看路.还有一些系统能够执行变道和其他高级操作.

但是这些系统的辅助还没有完全能够取代人类驾驶员,也不提倡驾驶员在行驶车辆过程中转移注意力做其他活动.其一是自适应巡航控制使车辆以设定的速度行驶,自动减速和加速,以保持与前方车辆的设定跟随距离.日产晶振其二是车道居中提供持续的转向支持,以帮助将车辆保持在行驶车道的中间.IIHS总裁表示这里的重要信息是这些系统的早期使用者仍然对技术的限制知之甚少.目前阶段的高级辅助驾驶系统包含两个主要的功能,旨在协助驾驶员在高速公路上的驾驶.
